This explainer animation was created with the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre to illustrate the basic principles of energy balance — how the calories we consume and the calories we burn determine weight gain, loss, or maintenance. By breaking down the concepts of positive and negative energy balance, the video helps explain how managing calorie intake and expenditure supports a healthy weight and reduces the risk of disease.
Exercise & Appetite – Explainer Animation
This explainer animation, produced with the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre, explores the relationship between exercise, calorie use, and appetite. The video explains why most forms of exercise burn fewer calories than we expect, why extra food is usually unnecessary on exercise days, and how the body draws on large energy reserves during activity. By clarifying the difference between exercise and daily physical activity, and showing how calorie balance works, the animation helps audiences understand how to fuel exercise sensibly without disrupting healthy weight management.
Bathtub & Saucepan Model of Appetite – Explainer Animation
This explainer animation, created with the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre, illustrates the bathtub and saucepan model of appetite. Using simple metaphors, the video explains how the body stores energy as calories, why hunger signals fluctuate during the day, and how fullness is linked to food in the gut rather than overall energy reserves. By showing the relationship between digestion, energy balance, and hunger signals, the animation helps make complex concepts in weight management more understandable for a wide audience.

This explainer animation was created for the Translational and Applied Research Group (TARG) at the University of Bristol to illustrate triangulation of evidence—how researchers combine multiple lines of evidence to strengthen the reliability of scientific findings.

This public health explainer animation was created with the TARG, University of Bristol to explain why all cigarettes sold in the UK must come in plain, standardized packs. The video shows how plain packaging reduces the appeal of smoking and increases attention to health warnings, supporting research evidence that underpinned UK tobacco legislation.

This research animation was created with the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit at the University of Bristol, in collaboration with the International Agency for Research on Cancer and UCSF. It explains how combining polygenic risk scores with modifiable lifestyle factors like smoking, obesity, and alcohol use can improve cancer risk prediction, showing both the potential and limitations of genetic risk profiling.
Minitablet Acceptability Study–Explainer Animation
This animation, created with the UCL School of Pharmacy and global partners, explores how minitablets can improve children’s medicine. Using genetics as a natural experiment, the video explains how researchers can untangle cause-and-effect in health — showing, for example, how smoking directly increases risks of cancer, heart disease and early mortality.
Statins & Ovarian Cancer Risk – Explainer Animation
This research animation was produced with the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit at the University of Bristol as part of the Cancer Research UK Integrative Cancer Epidemiology Programme. It explains findings from a study led by Dr James Yarmolinsky, showing how Mendelian randomisation can be used to test whether long-term statin use may lower the risk of ovarian cancer, with results suggesting a protective effect worth exploring in future clinical trials.
